Introduction

The start date for this course has been updatee to April 2, please see the course calendar (accessible from the course home page) for more information and key dates.

Course Format

This course is designed to increase access for surgeons working in rural and remote areas, and surgeons working in various time zones across Canada. You can complete this course remotely and asynchronously. We do pace your cohort so that you can meaningfully interact with your colleagues and the course team through the discussion forums and video discussions.

We do grant early access to content that comes later in the course, but please resist the urge to work too far ahead. There is a lot of valuable content to cover and your learning will be more effective when you sick with the group.

Course Content

Each module in this course follows the same format: Readings, Module Video, Management Activity, Case Workbook, and Discussion Forum.  Each module lasts two weeks and in that time you can work through the material at your own pace.  We've divided up the content into chunks so you can fit it into your busy schedule. There are some due dates throughout the course to keep everyone on track.

The full course calendar is linked at the bottom of this page.

Readings

We've divided the readings into two parts: Required and Optional.  The required texts are all provided as PDFs, while the optional texts come from the Oxorn-Foote text book (optional for this course) and OSS-online.ca (free to access).

There is a short survey on the optional readings in each module.  This will grant you additional learning hours for the readings you've completed and gives us a sense of what is valuable to you as you work your way through the course.

SOGC Guidelines
The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) produces Clinical Practice Guidelines for both public and medical education, which are published in the acclaimed Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada (JOGC).  They are distributed in this course with permissions of the SOGC.

Optional Textbook
  • Posner, G., Dy, J., Black A., and Jones, GD. (2013) Oxorn-Foote Human Labor and Birth (6e). Mc-Graw-Hill.
OSS-online.ca (link)
Easily accessible content for learners and OSS providers.  The procedures and situations described in the modules are supplements to the OSS training program as the resident may not be exposed to all of these procedures or situations in the 6 month time frame.

Activity Descriptions

Module Videos
These videos were recording during a previous offering of this course.  Each video is marked with chapters to easily access content.

Management Activity
Management activities are designed to give you an opportunity to test your knowledge and recall.  In each activity you will be asked to respond to a number of prompts and then we'll compare your answers to those of an experienced practitioner.  Take note of where your answers differ and bring your questions to the forum and video discussions.  These activities will culminate in a downloadable Management Sheet, which you can download for reference.

Case Workbook
Download the word document to complete the Case Workbook.  You will be presented with series of cases and prompts.  Respond to the with the knowledge and information you've gleaned from the videos and management activities.  Note you questions for the Burning Questions forum and Case Discussions.

Case Discussions (optional but highly recommended)
This is time scheduled for us to discuss the cases and to the module content.  Each video discussion will be led by at least two faculty members: a Context Expert and a Content Expert.  For context, a general surgeon like you who performs operative delivery and maternal care in practice.  For content, a practicing obstetrician who can provide details and nuance for your continued understanding of this topic.

Recordings of these session will be posted for those who cannot attend in person.  If you are unable to attend the live session, you are expected to review the recorded video to receive feedback and insight on the cases.

Summary Activity
In the final assignment for this course we would like you to make a list of your five biggest take away points from this course. What information will inspire you to adjust your practice? Is there anything you plan to share with a colleague or friend?
